Laparoscopic Gastrectomy for Cancer: Standard Techniques and Clinical Evidences

$

The first laparoscopy-assisted gastrectomy for gastric cancer was performed in Japan in 1991. In the ensuing 20 years, at first through a process of trial and error, then through the sharing of master surgeons’ accumulated experience, the procedure has been honed and refined to its current high level. From the beginning, it soon became evident that this much less invasive form of gastrectomy, in comparison with traditional open surgery, led to improved quality of life for postsurgical patients, and use of the procedure spread rapidly among gastric surgeons.  Early on, however, there were calls for the establishment of standard techniques and procedures to be followed, with a recognized need to improve the level of safety and the quality of lymph node dissection for local control in cancer treatment. Toward that end, the Laparoscopy-Assisted  Gastrectomy Club  was formed in 1999. In the following year, because both Japan and Korea experience a high rate of gastric cancer, specialists from those two nations came together to form the Japan–Korea  Laparoscopic  Gastrectomy  Joint Seminar, to facilitate and encourage the exchange of vital information. The result has been to achieve an evolving consensus among specialists in the field of endoscopic surgery in Japan and Korea with expertise that can be shared worldwide. A compilation of the current state-of-the-art is now presented in this volume, with accompanying DVD, which will be of great value to all endoscopic surgeons who perform laparoscopic gastrectomy.

Assessment of surgical innovation is complex. This is especially true in esophageal surgery owing to difficulties in interpreting pathophysiology, staging malignant tumors with accuracy, and standardizing and tailoring the available surgical procedures to the individual patient. This book introduces the general and the thoracic surgeon to the latest developments in esophageal surgery; in each chapter the reader will find a concise background analysis of the topic in question and a state of the art review of diagnosis and treatment. The indications for surgery and the rationale for use of an innovative technique or technology are discussed in detail. Challenging and provocative questions and comments by selected panelists complement each chapter, enhancing the quality of information. Innovation in Esophageal Surgery will be highly informative for both the novice and the expert surgeon wishing to enter the arena of esophageal surgery.

A multidisciplinary team of experts offers an evidence-based approach and critical analysis:  endoscopic, surgical, and hybrid surgical techniques that will soon change the approach to esophageal disease are described in detail.

Surgical Emergencies in Clinical Practice

$

With the introduction of new post-graduate Medical training in the UK, virtually all doctors will be exposed to some form of surgical training prior to specialization. Many of these doctors will have little exposure to surgical emergencies in medical school. Thus, they may unnecessarily refer to a senior doctor when not needed, or catastrophically neglect a patient needing urgent surgical opinion.

Surgical Emergencies in Clinical Practice is a compact resource which allows any clinician, without previous surgical knowledge, to be able to make an accurate diagnosis and have a treatment plan for the whole spectrum of surgical emergencies. The essential steps of initial management of all surgical emergencies is outlined in a manner that can be used on a day-to-day basis for clinical management.

Written by experts in the field, Surgical Emergencies in Clinical Practice is a valuable tool for all junior doctors and medical students in the UK, Europe, Asia and North America. It will also be of interest to nurse practitioners, general practitioners and allied health professionals managing these patients.

Surgery: A Case Based Clinical Review provides the reader with a comprehensive understanding of surgical diseases in one easy to use reference that combines multiple teaching formats. The book begins using a case based approach. The cases presented cover the diseases most commonly encountered on a surgical rotation. The cases are designed to provide the reader with the classic findings on history and physical examination. The case presentation is followed by a series of short questions and answers, designed to provide further understanding of the important aspects of the history, physical examination, differential diagnosis, diagnostic work-up and management, as well as questions that may arise on surgical rounds. Key figures and tables visually reinforce the important elements of the disease process. A brief algorithmic flow chart is provided so the reader can quickly understand the optimal management approach. Two additional special sections further strengthen the student’s comprehension. The first section covers areas of controversy in the diagnosis or management of each disease, and another section discusses pitfalls to avoid, where the inexperienced clinician might get in trouble. The text concludes with a series of multiple choice questions in a surgery shelf/USMLE format with robust explanations. Surgery: A Case Based Clinical Review is based on 20 years of Socratic medical student teaching by a nine-time Golden Apple teaching awardee from the UCLA School of Medicine and will be of great utility for medical students when they rotate on surgery, interns, physician assistant students, nursing students and nurse practitioner students.
